Basketball Recap: Sandhills Valley Comes Up Short

Sandhills Valley was not able to break out of their rough patch on Thursday as the team picked up their 24th straight loss dating back to last season. They were six points away from ending the streak, but they lost a 50-44 heartbreaker at the hands of the Sutherland Sailors. The Mavericks were probably out for revenge after losing 40-19 to them when the teams met back in December of 2023, then they'll just have to keep looking.

Despite the loss, Sandhills Valley still got an impressive performance from Hope Correll, who dropped a double-double on 12 points and 14 boards. The team also got some help courtesy of Layla Sanchez, who posted 12 points.

Even though they lost, Sandhills Valley smashed the offensive glass and finished the game with 19 offensive rebounds. That strong performance was nothing new for the team: they've now pulled down at least eight offensive boards in three consecutive contests.

Mahala Vasquez had a dynamite game for Sutherland, going 6 of 13 on her way to 16 points in addition to seven assists and seven steals. With that strong performance, Vasquez is now averaging an impressive 2.8 steals per game. The team also got some help courtesy of Addisyn Gunderson, who put up nine points.

Sandhills Valley's defeat dropped their record down to 0-3. As for Sutherland, they moved to 1-3 with that win, which also ended their seven-game losing streak.

Sandhills Valley didn't take long to hit the court again: they've already played their next match, a 41-17 loss against Arthur County on the 14th. As for Sutherland, they also wasted no time getting back out on the court and have already played their next game, a 43-22 defeat against South Platte on the 14th.
