Basketball Recap: SPIRE Academy's Luck Changes for the Better on Saturday

SPIRE Academy posted their biggest victory since November 17, 2024 on Saturday. They were the clear victor by a 59-38 margin over the St. Xavier Bombers. The win was all the more spectacular given the SPIRE's disadvantage in MaxPreps' Ohio basketball rankings (they are ranked 317th, while the Bombers are ranked 30th).

When it comes to explaining why St. Xavier lost, don't look at Brayden Reilly. Despite the final result, he went 6 for 8 on his way to 13 points. Reilly is trending in the right direction considering he's improved his point production for three straight games. Jacob Wassler was another key player, putting up six points and nine boards.

SPIRE Academy moved to 4-7 with that victory, which also ended their four-game losing streak. As for St. Xavier, they have traveled a rocky road recently having lost three of their last four matchups, which put a noticeable dent in their 10-3 record this season.

SPIRE Academy will take on Grand River Academy on Friday. As for St. Xavier, they didn't take long to hit the court again: they've already played their next contest, a 41-30 win against La Salle on the 13th.
