Softball Recap: Floyd County Takes a Loss

Floyd County fought the good fight in their extra-innings match against Patrick County on Tuesday but wound up with a less-than-desirable result. They fell just short of the Cougars by a score of 7-6. The Buffaloes were not able to repeat the success they had when they faced the Cougars earlier this season, when they won 8-1.

Emma Biesterveld spent all eight innings on the mound, and it's clear why: she surrendered only one earned (and five unearned) runs on five hits. She has been consistent recently: she hasn't given up more than two walks in three consecutive appearances.

On the hitting side, Lilly Gillispie made the most of her time at bat despite the final result and fired off two home runs while going 2-for-4. The team also got some help courtesy of Addison Allen, who went 1-for-3 with one home run.

Floyd County has been struggling recently as they've lost three of their last four contests. That's put a noticeable dent in their 10-4 record this season. As for Patrick County, the victory (which was their third in a row) raised their record to 13-3.

Both squads are looking forward to the support of their home crowds in their upcoming games. Floyd County will take on Fort Chiswell at 5:00 p.m. on Thursday. The Pioneers will aim to continue their four-game streak of scoring more runs each game than the last. As for Patrick County, they will challenge Alleghany at 5:00 p.m. on Friday. The two teams have allowed few runs on average (Patrick County 3.1, Alleghany 3.3) so any runs scored will be well earned.
