Softball Recap: Mercer Island's Luck Changes for the Better on Monday

Mercer Island had to endure a four-game losing streak, but that streak is no more. They blew past the Vashon Island Pirates 13-2 on Monday. The Islanders' hitters stepped up their game for this one, as that was the most runs they've scored all season.

Sienna Klopp was a major factor no matter where she played. She struck out nine batters over four innings while giving up just two earned (and three unearned) runs off two hits. The dominant performance gave her a new career-high in strikeouts. She was also big at the plate, scoring two runs while going 1-for-2.

In other batting news, Mercer Island got a big performance out of Nicole Henderson, who scored two runs and stole a base while going 2-for-2. Another player making a difference was Maren Schalla, who scored a run and stole a base while going 1-for-2.

Mercer Island always had someone on base and finished the game having posted an OBP of .630. They easily outclassed their opponents in that department as Vashon Island only posted an OBP of .438.

Mercer Island's win bumped their record up to 2-4. As for Vashon Island, they are on a three-game losing streak that has dropped them down to 1-3.

Coming up, Mercer Island will head out to face off against Interlake at 4:30 p.m. on Wednesday. Interlake has struggled to contain batters this season (they've allowed 9.25 runs per game on average), something Mercer Island will no doubt try to take advantage of. As for Vashon Island, they will look to defend their home field on Friday against Bellevue Christian at 4:00 p.m.
