Winning is always nice, but doing so behind a season-high score is even better (just ask Waverly). They walked away with a 60-50 victory over the Standing Bear Grizzlies on Friday. The win was some much needed relief for the Vikings as it spelled an end to their nine-game losing streak.
Waverly got their victory on the backs of several key players, but it was Ashton Heffelfinger out in front who went 5 of 12 on his way to 18 points and seven rebounds. Another player making a difference was Cameron Dubas, who went 5 for 6 en route to 15 points.
Waverly was working as a unit and finished the game with 15 assists. That's the most assists they've managed all season.
Standing Bear's loss came despite a true team effort from the offense, with many players turning in solid performances. Perhaps the best among them was Carlos Risueno, who posted 11 points and six boards. Coen Lambie was another key player, going 6 of 14 on his way to 14 points.
Waverly's win ended a six-game drought at home and bumped them up to 2-13. As for Standing Bear, their defeat was their third straight on the road, which dropped their record down to 2-10.
Waverly wasted no time getting back out on the court and has already played their next game, a 53-43 loss against Elkhorn North on the 31st. Standing Bear has also already played their next contest, a 63-58 victory against Glenwood on the 31st.
