Basketball Recap: Shayla Hill's Big Game Can't Quite Lead Desert Sunrise over Yuma

On Tuesday, the Desert Sunrise Golden Hawks lost to the Yuma Criminals at home by a 56-38 margin. While losing is never fun, the Golden Hawks can't take it too hard given the team's big disadvantage in MaxPreps' Arizona basketball rankings (they are ranked 218th, while the Criminals are ranked 104th).

Desert Sunrise lost despite a true team effort on offense, the best among them being Shayla Hill, who posted eight points and three steals. Hill is on a roll when it comes to steals, as she's now grabbed three or more in the last five games she's played. The team also got some help courtesy of Tessani Montgomery, who dropped a double-double on ten points and 11 rebounds.

Legend Redmond was the offensive standout of the game as she went 7 of 11 on her way to 15 points and six steals. Another player making a difference was Naveah Hawkins, who had four points in addition to nine rebounds and five steals.

Desert Sunrise has been struggling recently as they've lost five of their last six contests, which put a noticeable dent in their 6-8 record this season. As for Yuma, the victory made it two in a row for them and bumps their season record up to 6-2.

Desert Sunrise wasted no time getting back out on the court and has already played their next matchup, a 66-19 defeat against Cactus Shadows on the 8th. As for Yuma, they also didn't take long to hit the court again: they've already played their next game, a 55-38 loss against Dysart on the 13th.
