The Spring Mills Cardinals will take on the Fairland Dragons at 7:15 p.m. on Friday. Spring Mills knows how to get runs on the board -- the team has finished with ten runs or more in their past three contests -- so hopefully Fairland likes a good challenge.
Spring Mills barely beat Berkeley Springs the last time the pair played, but that sure wasn't the case this time around. The Cardinals were the clear victors by a 23-2 margin over the Indians on Tuesday. The Cardinals might be getting used to big wins seeing as the team has won eight matches by six runs or more this season.
Braydon Ward looked comfortable as he struck out seven batters over three innings while giving up no earned runs off two hits (and not a single walk).
On the hitting side, JP Sweeney was a standout: he went a perfect 3-for-3 with three runs, four RBI, and two doubles. Another player making a difference was Bryce Anders, who scored four runs and stole a base while getting on base in four of his five plate appearances.
Spring Mills always had someone on base and finished the game having posted an OBP of .690. That's the best OBP they've posted all season.
Fairland hadn't beaten South Point on the road since May 10, 2022 but that history sure didn't bother them on Wednesday. The Dragons came out on top against the Pointers by a score of 7-4. The victory made it back-to-back wins for the Dragons.
Wyatt Thomas made a splash while hitting and pitching. On the mound, he tossed two innings while giving up no earned runs off one hit. He has been consistent recently: he hasn't given up more than one walk in four consecutive appearances. He was also solid in the batter's box, going 2-for-4 with one triple, two RBI, and one run. That triple marked the first that he hit this season.
In other batting news, Garrett Cornwell was excellent, scoring a run while going 3-for-4. He has been hot recently, having posted three or more hits the last three times he's played. Josh Gillespie also deserves some recognition as he snagged his first stolen base of the season.
Spring Mills pushed their record up to 8-3 with the win, which was their third straight at home. The home victories came thanks in part to their pitching effort, having only surrendered 2.0 runs on average over those games. As for Fairland, their record now sits at 5-6.
