Duke received its first Class of 2013 verbal commitment Monday from five-star shooting guard Matt Jones of DeSoto (Texas).

The 6-foot-4, 185-pound junior delivered the news via Twitter just after 6 p.m. CST, posting "After long consideration with my parents and people around me, we felt it was best that I commit to DUKE UNIVERSITY!"

Jones is rated the No. 12 overall prospect in the Class of 2013 by MaxPreps.com. Regarded as one of the nation's deadliest 3-point shooters, he was among the leading scorers on Nike's Elite Youth Basketball League circuit over the summer playing for the Texas Titans at over 18 points per game.

As a sophomore at DeSoto, he helped the Eagles go 34-4 and reach the Class 5A state semifinals. Under head coach Chris Dyer, the program is among the best in Texas once again this season, currently ranked No. 2 in its classification by the Texas Association of Basketball Coaches.

With Jones' commitment, Duke has now landed star shooting guards in each of the last three classes. Jones is set to follow Strake Jesuit (Houston) senior Rasheed Sulaimon to Durham. Current Blue Devil freshman Austin Rivers was the MaxPreps National Player of the Year last season while at Winter Park (Fla.).
