Basketball Recap: Black River Comes Up Short

Black River was not able to break out of their rough patch on Friday as the team picked up their seventh straight defeat. They lost 67-47 to the Firelands Falcons. Unfortunately, that's the second time they've come up short against the Falcons this season, as they also lost their prior matchup 74-50 back in December of 2024.

Despite the loss, Black River saw an underclassman step up: sophomore Zane Kristophel went 6-for-15 en route to 15 points and six boards. Hunter Varney was another key player, putting up nine points and three steals.

Even though they lost, Black River smashed the offensive glass and finished the game with 13 offensive boards. That strong performance was nothing new for the team: they've now pulled down at least eight offensive rebounds in five consecutive games.

Black River's defeat dropped their record down to 4-16. As for Firelands, the win was the third in a row for them, bringing their record for this year to 14-6.

Black River didn't take long to hit the court again: they've already played their next contest, a 65-52 loss against Tuslaw on the 11th. As for Firelands, they also wasted no time getting back out on the court and have already played their next match, a 73-53 defeat against Brookside on the 8th.
