Softball Game Preview: Rio Mesa Spartans vs. Dos Pueblos Chargers

For the second straight game, Rio Mesa will face off against Dos Pueblos. The Spartans will venture away from home to challenge the Chargers at 3:30 p.m. on Friday. Rio Mesa's pitching crew has only allowed 3.5 runs per game this season, so Dos Pueblos' hitters will have their work cut out for them.

Rio Mesa fought the good fight in their extra-innings matchup against Dos Pueblos on Wednesday but wound up with a less-than-desirable result. They fell just short of the Chargers by a score of 8-7. Surprisingly, this marked the fourth straight game that the away team has come away the victor.

Analia Lopez put in work while hitting and pitching. On the mound, she struck out 13 batters over nine innings while giving up seven earned (and one unearned) runs off 11 hits. She has been nothing but reliable: she hasn't tossed less than 11 strikeouts in three consecutive appearances. She was also big at the plate, scoring three runs while going 2-for-4.

In other batting news, Keira Barry made the most of her time at bat despite the final result and got on base in four of her five plate appearances with one home run, two runs, and two RBI. Another player making a difference was Jazlynn Gonzalez, who scored a run and stole a base while going 1-for-4.

Dos Pueblos is on a roll lately: they've won seven of their last eight games. That's provided a massive bump to their 9-8 record this season. The wins came thanks in part to their hitting performance across that stretch, as they averaged 9.0 runs over those games. As for Rio Mesa, their loss was their first in the league, dropping their league record down to 8-1 and their overall record down to 13-6.
