The Seguin Matadors will challenge the Jefferson Mustangs at 4:30 p.m. on Tuesday. The teams are on pretty different trajectories at the moment (Seguin has nine straight victories, Jefferson has three straight losses), but none of that matters once you're on the field.
Jefferson's hitters are going to have their work cut out for them on Tuesday: Seguin hadn't allowed a single run the last three times they've hit the field. Seguin's pitchers stepped up to hand Lanier an 18-0 shutout on Friday. With that win, the Matadors brought their scoring average up to 6.6 runs per game.
Ethan Tipple and Jordan Herrera made a splash no matter where they played. On the mound, Tipple pitched two innings while giving up no earned runs off two hits. Meanwhile, Herrera pitched two innings while giving up no earned runs or hits. At the plate, Tipple scored a run and stole two bases while getting on base in three of his five plate appearances, while Herrera got on base in three of his four plate appearances with three RBI, one triple, and one stolen base.
In other batting news, Elliot Weaver was incredible, going a perfect 3-for-3 with three stolen bases, two runs, and one triple. Matthew Marek was another key player, scoring three runs and stealing a base while going 2-for-2.
Seguin kept the outfield on their toes and finished the game with 18 hits. That's a new trend for them: they were averaging 3.8 hits per game earlier this season, but in their last 15 contests they've averaged 12.4.
Meanwhile, Jefferson fell victim to Burbank and their airtight pitching crew on Saturday. They fell just short of the Bulldogs by a score of 1-0. The game marked the first time this season in which the Mustangs were not able to get on the board.
Alexzander Escobar spent all seven innings on the mound, and it's clear why: he surrendered a run (which was unearned) on four hits and racked up six Ks. That's the fewest hits he has allowed since March 4th.
Seguin pushed their record up to 12-5-1 with the victory, which was their sixth straight on the road. The wins came thanks in part to their pitching effort, having only surrendered 0.8 runs on average over those games. As for Jefferson, they now have a losing record of 9-10.
Tuesday's matchup might come down to which pitcher can control the ball better. Seguin has hit smart this season, having averaged an OBP of .434. However, it's not like Jefferson struggles in that department as they've averaged .437. With both teams so capable at the plate, fans should be ready for an impressive hitting performance.
