League recap: Haxtun beats Merino in tight affair

A-8 North - Plains (8 Man) recap Oct. 9, 2012

Haxtun and Merino played the most hotly contested game in A-8 North - Plains (8 Man) this week, with Haxtun eventually emerging with a 13-12 victory.

Akron's dynamic duo of Jared Clarkson and Garret Basler proved tough for Caliche to stop, as they were the top passer and receiver in the league this week. Clarkson threw for 146 yards and Basler had 75 yards receiving. Levi Hottinger helped Akron's passing attack out by catching three balls for 46 yards.

Kylar Mai was the most productive running back in the league this week. In seven carries, he ran for 133 yards as Dayspring Christian Academy defeated the Buffaloes. Teammate Ben Sanderford added to the ground attack by rushing for 68 yards.

Dayspring Christian Academy's offense has been unstoppable this season and the Eagles feature the season leaders in passing, rushing and receiving yards. Mai has thrown for 753 yards and seven touchdowns this season, while Christian Hersberger has 22 catches for 280 yards. Mai also leads the league in rushing with 825 yards.

The marquee game in A-8 North - Plains (8 Man) this week will be the clash between the Fightin' Bulldogs and the Eagles. Haxtun comes into the matchup ranked 19th in the state, while Dayspring Christian Academy ranks fifth.

Akron made the biggest jump in the national rankings this week, rising to 116 from 206. The improvement came about via a 44-8 victory over Caliche last week.
