Soccer Game Preview: Boerne vs. Wagner

The Boerne Greyhounds will venture away from home to challenge the Wagner Thunderbirds at 7:15 p.m. on Friday. Neither team made it on the board the last time they hit the pitch, so they've probably got a bit of extra motivation.

If Wagner heads into halftime all tied up, they better play a good second half: that's when Boerne took over last week. Boerne's defense stepped up to hand New Braunfels a 1-0 shutout on Tuesday. That's two games straight that the Greyhounds have won by just one goal.

Meanwhile, Wagner was not able to break out of their rough patch on Tuesday as the team picked up their third straight loss. They came up short against Alamo Heights, falling 9-1. While losing is never fun, the Thunderbirds can't take it too hard given the team's big disadvantage in MaxPreps' Texas soccer rankings (they are ranked 583rd, while the Mules are ranked 116th).

Wagner's goal came courtesy of Juany Corpus, which was the first she's scored this season.

The victory made it two in a row for Boerne and bumps their season record up to 10-5. Those victories came thanks in part to their defensive effort, having only given up zero goals over those two games. As for Wagner, their defeat dropped their record down to 5-13-2.

Boerne took their win against Wagner in their previous meeting back in January by a conclusive 8-0. The rematch might be a little tougher for Boerne since the squad won't have the home-pitch advantage this time around. We'll see if the change in venue makes a difference.
