Baseball Recap: Calipatria Takes a Loss

Calipatria extended their losing streak to three on Saturday, dropping their season record down to 4-5 in the process. They came up short against the Mountain Empire Redhawks, falling 14-7. Unfortunately, that's the second time they've come up short against the Redhawks this season, as they also lost their prior matchup 7-2 back in February.

Oscar Lopez was cooking despite his team's loss, going 2-for-4 with two stolen bases and two runs. He has become a key player for Calipatria: the team is 2-1 when he posts at least two stolen bases, but 2-4 otherwise. Brandon Espinoza also deserves some recognition as he hit his first double of the season.

As for Mountain Empire, the victory was the fourth in a row for them, bringing their record up to 8-4. Considering they have won five matchups by more than six runs this season, Saturday's blowout was nothing new.

On Mountain Empire's side, Michael Nobel and Jesse Arnold did most of the damage at the plate: Nobel went 3-for-4 with four runs, one stolen base, and one double, while Arnold went 2-for-4 with two stolen bases, three runs, and three RBI. Those four runs gave Nobel a new career-high. Javier Lopez was another key player, getting on base in four of his five plate appearances with one RBI.

Calipatria didn't take long to hit the field again: they've already played their next game, an 11-1 defeat against Palo Verde Valley on the 14th. As for Mountain Empire, they also wasted no time getting back out on the field and have already played their next contest, a 7-2 win against Liberty Charter on the 17th.
