Softball Game Preview: Granada Matadors vs. Carondelet Cougars

The Granada Matadors will take on the Carondelet Cougars at 1:15 p.m. on Friday. Neither of those teams managed to put together many runs in their previous contests, so the offenses might be a little more motivated than usual.

Granada saw some tournament action on Thursday. They fell 5-2 to Benicia. The loss continues a trend for the Matadors in their meetings with the Panthers: they've now lost four in a row.

Ella Vonbergen was a force to be reckoned with on the mound despite the final result: she struck out nine batters over 5.1 innings while giving up just two earned runs off five hits.

On the hitting side, Granada saw five different players step up and record at least one hit. One of them was Maddie Bittman, who went 1-for-3 with one RBI.

Meanwhile, Carondelet was not able to break out of their rough patch on Thursday as the team picked up their third straight defeat. They took a 4-1 hit to the loss column at the hands of Saint Francis.

Maia Scholtens was a force to be reckoned with on the mound despite the final result: she struck out seven batters over five innings while giving up three earned (and one unearned) runs off six hits.

Carondelet's loss dropped their record down to 5-8. As for Granada, their defeat dropped their record down to 6-5.

Granada took their victory against Carondelet in their previous meeting back in April of 2024 by a conclusive 11-4 score. The rematch might be a little tougher for the Matadors since the team won't have the home-field advantage this time around. We'll see if the change in venue makes a difference.
