The Northgate Flames will take on the South Allegheny Gladiators at 6:00 p.m. on Thursday. Northgate is strutting in with some hitting muscle as they've averaged 8.2 runs per game this season.
Northgate is probably headed into the match with a chip on their shoulder considering Apollo Ridge just ended the team's five-game winning streak on Wednesday. They came up short against the Vikings, falling 14-1. Having soared to a lofty 17 runs in the game before, the Flames couldn't push the score so high this time.
Northgate saw three different players step up and record at least one hit. One of them was Gracie Auth, who scored a run and stole two bases while going 1-for-2.
Meanwhile, winning is always nice, but doing so behind a season-high score is even better (just ask South Allegheny). They were the clear victors by a 21-1 margin over Springdale on Wednesday. While the Gladiators didn't have the best season last year (they finished 7-10), it's starting to look like those struggles are a thing of the past.
Carrera Conley made a splash no matter where she played. On the mound, she struck out eight batters over three innings while giving up no earned runs or hits. Those eight strikeouts gave her a new career-high. She was also stellar in the batter's box, going 3-for-4 with four RBI, one triple, and one double. That triple marked the first that she hit this season.
In other batting news, Cadence McBride was a standout: she scored four runs and stole two bases while getting on base in all four of her plate appearances. Those stolen bases marked the first that she snagged this season. The team also got some help courtesy of Emma Jackson, who scored four runs and stole a base while going 3-for-4.
South Allegheny always had someone on base and finished the game having posted an OBP of .719. That's the best OBP they've posted all season.
The win made it two in a row for South Allegheny and bumps their season record up to 5-1. The victories came thanks in part to their pitching effort, having only surrendered a grand total of 3 runs in those games. As for Northgate, their defeat dropped their record down to 6-3.
The pitchers for both teams better look sharp on Thursday as neither team is afraid to steal. Northgate has been swiping bases left and right this season, having averaged 4.3 stolen bases per game. However, it's not like South Allegheny struggles in that department as they've been averaging 5.2 stolen bases. The only question left is which team can snag more.
