Baseball Recap: Stevens Starts Season with Victory on the Road

Stevens had to travel to play their first game of the season, but the final result was worth the trip. They came out on top in a nail-biter against the Holmes Huskies on Tuesday, sneaking past 2-1. The Falcons have seen this before: they got the W the last time they saw the Huskies, too.

Jeremy Gallardo looked comfortable as he didn't allow a single earned run over four innings pitched. The dominant performance also gave him a new career-high in strikeouts (five).

On the hitting side, Jordan Vargas was excellent, scoring a run and stealing two bases while getting on base in three of his four plate appearances. Dominic Mason was another key player, scoring a run and stealing four bases while going 1-for-3.

Holmes' defeat dropped their record down to 0-2.

Looking ahead, Stevens will take on Bastrop in a tournament on Friday. The last three games Stevens has played (dating back to last season) have been within two runs, so don't be surprised if it's a close one. As for Holmes, they will be taking part in a tournament against Palmview at 5:40 p.m. on Thursday.
