Basketball Recap: Marshall's Luck Changes for the Better on Saturday

Marshall had lost six straight headed into Saturday's contest, but Lori Garcia didn't let it get to seven. The Rams came out on top against the Stevens Falcons by a score of 57-45 on Saturday thanks in part to Garcia, who shot 45% from the field to rack up 21 points in addition to seven assists and seven boards. Marshall is 4-2 when Garcia posts 20 or more points, but 9-12 otherwise.

The team also got some help courtesy of Brittney Ogbueze, who dropped a double-double with ten points and 13 rebounds. She is also on a roll when it comes to blocks, as she's now posted two or more in each of the last six games she's played.

When it comes to explaining why Stevens lost, don't look at Andra Stokes. Despite the final result, she posted 21 points and three steals. That was a full 46.7% of the Falcons' points, marking the seventh time in a row Stokes has scored more than a third of the team's points. Samarah Ghalleb also deserves some recognition as she scored her first point of the season.

Marshall's win was their first in the district, bumping their district record up to 1-7 and their overall record up to 13-14. As for Stevens, they have been struggling recently as they've lost nine of their last ten games. That's put a noticeable dent in their 4-19 record this season.

Marshall will look to defend their home court on Wednesday against Taft at 5:30 p.m. The Rams' defense better be ready for this one: the Raiders have averaged an impressive 53.7 points per game this season. As for Stevens, they will venture away from home to challenge Holmes at 5:30 p.m. on Wednesday. The Huskies have been getting the ball to fall more lately as they've increased their point totals each of their last three games.
