Softball Game Preview: Athens Golden Eagles vs. Madison Academy Mustangs

The Athens Golden Eagles will face off against the Madison Academy Mustangs at 4:30 p.m. on Thursday. The squads are rolling into the game with opposing streaks: Athens has struggled recently with three losses in a row, while Madison Academy will arrive with three straight victories.

The home team had won the previous three meetings between Athens and Hazel Green, and Hazel Green kept the tradition alive. The Golden Eagles fell just short of the Trojans by a score of 6-5 on Tuesday.

Lily Lowery made the most of her time at bat despite the final result and scored a run and stole a base while going 3-for-4. She has been hot recently, having posted at least one stolen base the last three times she's played. Caitlyn Tedford was another key player, scoring a run and stealing a base while going 2-for-3.

Meanwhile, Madison Academy put their dominant pitchers on display in the team's third consecutive shutout on Tuesday. They never let Elkmont get on the board and left with a 12-0 win. The Mustangs might be getting used to big wins seeing as the team has won 12 matches by six runs or more this season.

Madison Academy pushed their record up to 19-3 with the victory, which was their 13th straight at home dating back to last season. The home wins came thanks in part to their hitting performance across that stretch, as they averaged 9.1 runs over those games. As for Athens, their defeat dropped their record down to 16-9.

Athens came out on top in a nail-biter against Madison Academy in their previous matchup back in February, sneaking past 2-1. Will the Golden Eagles repeat their success, or do the Mustangs have a new game plan this time around? We'll find out soon enough.
