Baseball Preview: Somerset Briar Jumpers vs. Wayne County Cardinals
The Somerset Briar Jumpers are taking a road trip to take on the Wayne County Cardinals at 6:00 p.m. on Monday. Somerset's pitching crew has only allowed 2.8 runs per game this season, so Wayne County's hitters will have their work cut out for them.
Things were looking good for Somerset after they put the first points on the board on Friday, but unfortunately for them things went downhill from there. They fell just short of Danville by a score of 5-4.
Josh Bruner and Conner Vanderploeg stepped up to the plate in a big way. Bruner went 1-for-3 with one home run, while Vanderploeg went 1-for-3 with one home run. That hit marked the first that Vanderploeg got this season.
Even though they lost, Somerset lost a few balls and finished the game with two home runs. That's the most home runs they've posted since back in April of 2024.
Wayne County not only won on Saturday, but they posted their biggest win since April 23, 2024. They blew past Garrard County 18-8.
Somerset now has a losing record of 2-3. As for Wayne County, their victory (their first of the season) made their record 1-2.
Somerset beat Wayne County 4-1 in their previous matchup back in May of 2024. The rematch might be a little tougher for Somerset since the squad won't have the home-field advantage this time around. We'll see if the change in venue makes a difference.
