Preview: Manzano vs. La Cueva

Manzano and La Cueva are battling to keep their seasons alive when they face off in a playoff match this Saturday at 1:00 PM. Not surprisingly for a postseason game, Manzano and La Cueva will be the toughest opponent either team has met this year.

Manzano earned a pretty comfortable 28 - 10 victory over Las Cruces last week. One major factor in the win was the play of junior Xavier Ivey-saud, who earned one touchdown and 179 yards rushing the ball. Ivey-saud's score was a 25-yard scramble in the third quarter. If you haven't heard of Ivey-saud, then you haven't been paying attention since he has loomed large in Manzano's past 11 games. Senior Jordan Byrd got in on the action, too, by scoring two touchdowns.

Meanwhile, La Cueva came out on top in a nail-biter against Cleveland last week, sneaking past 37 - 34. One of the main ringleaders for La Cueva was senior Reece Wilkinson, who ran for 85 yards and also punched in one touchdown. Wilkinson has now scored at least one TD in the past three consecutive games.

Their wins bumped Manzano to 12-0 and La Cueva to 11-1. It should be a fierce showdown as Manzano is 1st in the MaxPreps state rankings and La Cueva is 2nd. Check back on MaxPreps to find out who wants it more.
