Football Recap: Merritt Island Drops Highest Score of Season Against ED White

Winning is always nice, but doing so behind a season-high score is even better (just ask Merritt Island). They narrowly escaped with a win as the squad sidled past the ED White Commanders 52-49. That's two games straight that the Mustangs have won by exactly three points.

Kevin Verpaele continued his habit of posting crazy stat lines, throwing for 336 yards and five TDs while completing 75% of his passes, and also rushing for 100 yards on only 14 carries. Those 100 rushing yards gave him a new career-high. Drew Sarver was Verpaele's top target, picking up 108 receiving yards and one score.

Despite the loss, ED White still got an impressive performance from King Boylston, who rushed for 115 yards and one touchdown on only 11 carries, and also threw for 185 yards and three TDs on only 14 passes. Boylston has been hot recently, having posted three or more passing touchdowns the last three times he's played. Another player making a difference was Marion Laguerre, who picked up 41 receiving yards and a pair of scores.

The victory was the third in a row for Merritt Island, bringing their record up to 4-2. A key ingredient in that success has been their performance when it comes to yards per carry: they averaged an imposing 5.77 yards per carry in those games compared to only 3.57 in the others. As for ED White, their loss was their first of the season and makes their record 4-1.

Merritt Island will have some time to savor their win since their next game is a little ways off: they'll take on Eau Gallie at 7:00 p.m. on October 10. As for ED White, they will head out to face off against Atlantic Coast at 6:30 p.m. on Friday. The two teams might be coming in a bit winded given these two teams combined for 960 yards in their previous games.
