Baseball Recap: Plainville Takes a Loss

Plainville extended their losing streak to five on Saturday, dropping their season record down to 6-8 in the process. They fell 4-1 to the Pomperaug Panthers. The Blue Devils were given a dose of their own medicine in this game as the Panthers apparently hadn't forgotten their loss the last time these teams played back in May of 2024.

As for Pomperaug, they are on a roll lately: they've won three of their last four contests. That's provided a massive bump to their 6-9 record this season. The wins came thanks in part to their pitching effort, having only surrendered 3.5 runs on average over those games.

For Pomperaug's part, Alex Augustine spent all seven innings on the mound, and it's clear why: he surrendered only one earned run on six hits. Augustine is becoming a predictor of the Panthers' success: when he allows at most one earned run the team is 3-1 (and 3-8 when he doesn't).

At the plate, Andrew Brocksmith was excellent, going a perfect 3-for-3 with two runs and two doubles. Those two doubles gave him a new career-high. Another player making a difference was Brayden Cloutier, who went 1-for-3 with one stolen base, two RBI, and one run.

Looking ahead, Plainville will take on Middletown at 7:00 p.m. on Saturday. The Blue Devils are facing the Blue Dragons at the right time seeing as the Blue Dragons are stuck on a nine-game losing streak. Pomperaug will be paying especially close attention to Plainville's match: after Plainville faces off against Guilford, they'll take on Pomperaug again at 4:00 p.m. on Saturday.
