Baseball Game Preview: Bishop O'Connell Knights vs. Gonzaga Eagles

The Bishop O'Connell Knights will face off against the Gonzaga Eagles at 4:30 p.m. on Wednesday. Bishop O'Connell will be strutting in after a win while Gonzaga will be coming in after a loss.

Gonzaga will square off against a team with plenty of momentum: Bishop O'Connell extended their winning streak to three on Saturday. The Knights came within a single run of losing the streak, but they secured an 8-7 W against Bishop Ireton. That's two games straight that the Knights have won by just one run.

Mark Zonavetch looked comfortable as he pitched two innings while giving up no earned runs off one hit.

On the hitting side, Chris Connolly was excellent, scoring two runs and stealing a base while getting on base in three of his four plate appearances. The dominant performance also gave him a new career-high in RBI (two). Noah Haught was another key player, scoring a run while going 1-for-3.

Meanwhile, Gonzaga is ranked highly in their home state and on Saturday they took on another highly ranked team in the form of Abingdon. The Eagles fell 4-0 to the Falcons. The Eagles' defeat signaled the end of their five-game winning streak.

Bishop O'Connell pushed their record up to 12-4 with the victory, which was their fifth straight at home. They've had to fight for that success though, as they only beat their opponents by an average of three runs across that stretch. As for Gonzaga, their loss dropped their record down to 11-6.

Bishop O'Connell couldn't quite finish off Gonzaga when the teams last played back in March of 2024 and fell 4-2. Can the Knights avenge their defeat or is history doomed to repeat itself? We'll find out soon enough.
