Martin Luther dropped their record down to 13-6 on Thursday, which also ended the team's five-game streak of wins. They fell 11-8 to the St. Thomas More Cavaliers. The Spartans were not able to make up for their loss to the Cavaliers from their previous meeting back in May of 2024.
Martin Luther saw four different players step up and record at least one hit. One of them was Brendan Scheel, who went 2-for-4 with two runs, one double, and one RBI.
As for St. Thomas More, they are on a roll lately: they've won nine of their last 12 matchups. That's provided a nice bump to their 15-8 record this season. Those victories came thanks in part to their hitting performance across that stretch, as they averaged 10.6 runs over those games.
On St. Thomas More's side, Gabe Schmidt and Manny Sostre made a big impact while hitting and pitching. On the mound, Schmidt pitched three innings while giving up no earned runs off one hit. Meanwhile, Sostre struck out six batters over four innings while giving up just two earned (and six unearned) runs off four hits. Schmidt has been nothing but reliable on the mound: he hasn't given up more than two walks in seven consecutive appearances. At bat, Schmidt went 2-for-5 with two runs, two RBI, and one double, while Sostre went 3-for-4 with three stolen bases, two RBI, and one run. Those three stolen bases gave Sostre a new career-high.
In other batting news, Luke Mrazek and Brayden Alivo did most of the damage at the plate: Mrazek went 2-for-4 with three runs, one triple, and one stolen base, while Alivo went 2-for-4 with two stolen bases, two runs, and one double. That's the most stolen bases Alivo has posted since back in April. Another player making a difference was Carson Weist, who went 2-for-4 with one run, one double, and one RBI.
