Softball Game Preview: Waterloo Vikings vs. Springfield Tigers

For the second straight game, Waterloo will face off against Springfield. The Vikings will be playing in front of their home fans against the Tigers at 5:00 p.m. on Tuesday. Waterloo is strutting in with some hitting muscle as they've averaged 7.8 runs per game this season.

For whatever reason, it's the away team that's had the advantage when Waterloo and Springfield meet (three straight games heading into this one) and that held true again on Monday. The Vikings came out on top against the Tigers by a score of 7-3. The victory was some much needed relief for the Vikings as it spelled an end to their three-game losing streak.

Jolean Hampton made a big impact while hitting and pitching. She looked comfortable on the mound, striking out 12 batters over seven innings while giving up just one earned (and two unearned) runs off seven hits. She has been nothing but reliable: she hasn't tossed less than five strikeouts in five consecutive appearances. She was also big at the plate, going 2-for-4 with two runs, one triple, and one stolen base.

In other batting news, the team relied heavily on Bayley English, who went 2-for-4 with three RBI, one run, and one double. Another player making a difference was Kristlyn Kehrer, who went 2-for-4 with one double and one RBI.

Springfield's loss ended an eight-game streak of wins at home and dropped them to 10-4. As for Waterloo, their win bumped their record up to 7-5.
