Monroe Academy had to travel to play their first game of the season, but the final result was worth the trip. Their pitcher stepped up to hand the Sparta Academy Warriors an 18-0 shutout on Friday. The Volunteers haven't had any issues with the Warriors recently, as the game was their sixth consecutive win against them.

Mia Shadburn was a major factor no matter where she played. On the mound, she struck out seven batters over three innings while giving up no earned runs or hits (and only one walk). Shadburn was also big at the plate, going a perfect 4-for-4 with six RBI, two triples, and three runs.
