Softball Recap: Westville Picks Up Fifth Straight Win at Home

Westville proved they can win big last Friday (they won by 11) and on Monday they proved they can win the close ones too. They won by a run and slipped past the Bremen Lions 8-7. The victory was just business as usual for the Blackhawks, who after three games remain undefeated this season.

Kierstin Vargas made a splash while hitting and pitching. She struck out 15 batters over seven innings while giving up four earned (and three unearned) runs off ten hits. She has been nothing but reliable on the mound: she hasn't tossed less than 13 strikeouts any time she's pitched this season. She was also big at the plate, scoring a run and stealing a base while going 1-for-4.

In other batting news, Maddison Cole and Miranda Sparks did most of the damage at the plate: Cole went 3-for-4 with four RBI and one double, while Sparks scored two runs while going 3-for-4. Those three hits gave Cole a new career-high. Olivia Mallon was another key player, scoring a run while going 2-for-4.

Westville kept the outfield on their toes and finished the game with 13 hits. That strong performance was nothing new for the team: they've now got at least eight hits in four consecutive matches dating back to last season.

Westville pushed their record up to 3-0 with the win, which was their fifth straight at home dating back to last season. The home victories came thanks in part to their hitting performance across that stretch, as they averaged 10.6 runs over those games. As for Bremen, they are on a four-game losing streak that has dropped them down to 2-4.

Both teams are looking forward to the support of their home crowds in their upcoming games. Westville will take on Glenn at 4:30 p.m. on Wednesday. As for Bremen, they will challenge Goshen at 5:30 p.m. on Tuesday.
