Softball Recap: Grand Island Gets the Win

Grand Island proved they can win big on Monday (they won by 12) and on Tuesday they proved they can win the close ones too. They narrowly escaped with a win as the squad sidled past the North Tonawanda Lumberjacks 4-2. This was a revenge game for the Vikings: when they faced off against the Lumberjacks last Wednesday, they had to take a 5-3 loss.

Natalie Kopf spent all seven innings on the mound, and it's clear why: she surrendered two runs (both of which were unearned) on three hits. She has been nothing but reliable: she hasn't given up more than two walks in five consecutive appearances.

At the plate, the team relied heavily on Maddie McGowan, who went 2-for-3 with one home run, three RBI, and two runs. That's the most RBI she has posted since back in April.

Grand Island is on a roll lately: they've won four of their last five games. That's provided a nice bump to their 10-5 record this season. The victories came thanks in part to their pitching effort, having only surrendered 1.2 runs on average over those games. As for North Tonawanda, their defeat was their first in the league, dropping their league record down to 5-1 and their overall record down to 8-2.

Grand Island and North Tonawanda should be looking forward to their upcoming games as both have a sizable advantage in the MaxPreps New York Rankings. The Vikings (ranked 117th) will meet Kenmore East (ranked 530th) at 7:00 p.m. on Thursday. Meanwhile, North Tonawanda will challenge Lewiston-Porter at 5:00 p.m. on Wednesday with a big rank advantage (77 vs. 424).
