League recap: Liberty rises in state rank

4A Region II District 9 recap October 8, 2013

Liberty moved up to 485 from 669 in the state rankings this week, the biggest jump in 4A Region II District 9. The Redhawks were able to move up by topping Little Elm 22-18.

Adding to the longest winning streak in the league this week, The Colony beat Frisco 20-14. The victory was the fifth in a row for the team.

Bryan Hammond was a beast in the backfield as The Colony defeated the Raccoons.

Kelly Cordova threw for 359 yards and 2 touchdowns.

Hammond was the most successful running back in the league this week. He ran for 254 yards on 30 carries as Rudy Rangel's team topped Prosper. Alec Gibbons also contributed to the rushing game with 18 yards on the ground.

The Titans' Cordova and McCord led 4A Region II District 9 in both passing and receiving yards. Cordova has thrown for 1,376 yards this season, while McCord has 29 catches for 402 yards. The Cougars' Hammond leads the league in rushing yards with 1,116.

An important game coming up in the league this week will be when The Colony takes on Heritage. At the moment, the Cougars are in first, while the Coyotes are in seventh.

Wakeland was the team that made the biggest jump in the rankings, moving from seventh to fourth in the league. Earlier in the week, the Wolverines triumphed over Heritage 28-22.
