Softball Game Preview: Wickliffe Blue Devils vs. Notre Dame-Cathedral Latin Lions

The Wickliffe Blue Devils will square off against the Notre Dame-Cathedral Latin Lions at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday. Both teams took a loss in their last game, so they'll have plenty of motivation to get the 'W'.

Last Tuesday, Wickliffe came up short against Mayfield and fell 8-4. The loss put an end to the Blue Devils' undefeated start to the season.

Leigha Blazetic was huge no matter where she played even without the win. On the mound, she struck out 14 batters over seven innings while giving up four earned (and four unearned) runs off five hits. She has been consistent recently: she hasn't tossed less than eight strikeouts any time she's pitched this season. She was also solid in the batter's box, going 2-for-4 with two RBI and one double.

In other batting news, Maddie Kita made the most of her time at bat despite the final result and scored two runs while going 3-for-4. Another player making a difference was Mackayla Gazdak, who scored two runs while going 2-for-3.

Meanwhile, it was a proper cat-fight when Notre Dame-Cathedral Latin duked it out with Elyria Catholic on Thursday. The Lions fell 8-4 to the Panthers.

Lexi Simon and Sienna Steinmetz did some serious damage despite the final result: Simon went 2-for-4 with one triple, one run, and one double, while Steinmetz got on base in all four of her plate appearances with two stolen bases. Lily Rader was another key player, going 1-for-4 with two RBI and one double.

Notre Dame-Cathedral Latin's loss dropped their record down to 1-1. As for Wickliffe, their defeat was their first of the season and makes their record 2-1.

Wickliffe beat Notre Dame-Cathedral Latin 7-2 when the teams last played back in April of 2024. Will the Blue Devils repeat their success, or do the Lions have a new game plan this time around? We'll find out soon enough.
