Corona del Mar is 0-6 against Edison since May of 2021 but things could change on Tuesday. The Sea Kings will challenge the Chargers at 3:15 p.m. Corona del Mar has given up an average of 10.2 runs per game this season, but Tuesday's game will give them a chance to turn things around.
Corona del Mar came into their game on Thursday off a hard-fought close win, but unfortunately suffered a serious change of fortune. They came up short against Newport Harbor, falling 18-2.
Corona del Mar saw three different players step up and record at least one hit. One of them was Makenna Smith, who went 1-for-3 with one run and one double.
Meanwhile, Edison made easy work of Newport Harbor on Tuesday and carried off a 12-4 victory.
Elina Garcia was a major factor no matter where she played. On the mound, she tossed seven innings while giving up just one earned (and three unearned) runs off 12 hits. She has been consistent recently: she hasn't given up more than one walk in three consecutive appearances. She was also big at the plate, going 3-for-4 with two RBI and one run. Those three hits gave her a new career-high.
In other batting news, Avea Niumata and Kaila Arakaki did most of the damage at the plate: Niumata went 3-for-4 with two runs, two RBI, and one double, while Arakaki went 3-for-5 with two doubles, one run, and one RBI. Those three hits gave Arakaki a new career-high. Aubrey Sprigonardo also deserves some recognition as she brought in her first RBI of the season.
Edison hit smart and finished the game with only two strikeouts. The team has now struck out at least two batters in three consecutive contests.
Corona del Mar's defeat dropped their record down to 7-12. As for Edison, their record now sits at 9-12.
Edison's hitters will have their work cut out for them on Tuesday. Corona del Mar has been retiring batters left and right this season, having averaged 7.2 strikeouts per game. It's a different story for Edison, though, as they've been averaging only 1.7 strikeouts. Will Corona del Mar keep running through batters, or will the Chargers buck the trend?
Corona del Mar suffered a grim 19-1 defeat to Edison in their previous matchup back in March. Can the Sea Kings avenge their loss or is history doomed to repeat itself? We'll find out soon enough.
