Montverde Academy claims second tournament title

New head coach Kevin Boyle led Montverde Academy (Fla.) to its second tournament title of the season Saturday night with a 49-40 victory over Orlando Christian Prep.

The Eagles won the Kingdom of the Sun Holiday Classic in December and held serve with the win over OCP to finish on top of their own Montverde Academy Invitational. Boyle's squad also went 3-1 and reached the semifinals of the prestigious City of Palms Classic.

Florida signee Michael Frazier paced Montverde Academy with 15 points. Junior point guard Kasey Hill – also committed to the Gators – added 14.

No. 9 in this week's Academy Top 10, Montverde Academy has beat teams from six states (California, Georgia, Louisiana, New York, Pennsylvania, Tennessee) outside of Florida this season. The Eagles also beat Orlando Christian Prep 74-62 in November.

Proviso East stays perfect



Xcellent 25 No. 19 Proviso East (Maywood, Ill.) stayed unbeaten Saturday night with a 79-36 win over Addison Trail – and did it without state player of the year candidate Keith Carter.

Sterling Brown – the younger brother of Phoenix Suns guard Shannon Brown – helped fill the void for the the Pirates (17-0) with 17 points and 12 rebounds. Brown, a national Top 100 junior, was joined by Paris Burns (17 points), Trashaun Carrol (13) and Paris Lee (10) in double figures.

Carter, a 6-foot senior headed to Saint Louis, picked up a pair of technical fouls last Saturday against Leyden, forcing him to the bench for the game against Addison Trail.

The Pirates will face 2011 Class 4A state runner-up Warren (Gurnee) in a key game next month at the McDonald's City-Suburban Showdown.

Montrose Christian bounces back

Two nights after a stunning loss to Coolidge (Washington, D.C.), Academy Top 10 No. 3 Montrose Christian (Rockville, Md.) responded with a 67-31 win over Chapelgate Christian (Marriottsville, Md.).



Virginia-bound senior Justin Anderson led the Mustangs with 17 points. Venezuelan forward Michael Carrera was the only other Montrose Christian player in double figures with 10 points.

In Thursday's loss to Coolidge, Montrose couldn't contain 6-4 junior De'Shaun Morman, who nearly matched Chapelgate's Saturday-night output with 28 points.
