Basketball Game Preview: Smithfield Packers vs. Poquoson Islanders

Smithfield and Poquoson are an even 5-5 against one another since January of 2019, but not for long. Having just played yesterday, the Smithfield Packers will get right back to it and host the Poquoson Islanders at 7:00 p.m. on Tuesday. Smithfield is coming into the contest on a four-game losing streak.

On Monday, Smithfield had to suffer through a 61-31 loss at the hands of Western Branch. While losing is never fun, the Packers can't take it too hard given the team's big disadvantage in MaxPreps' Virginia basketball rankings (they are ranked 299th, while the Bruins are ranked 56th).

Meanwhile, Poquoson humbled York with a 53-20 victory. The matchup marked the Islanders' most dominant victory of the season.

Poquoson's win came from a few key players Smithfield will need to keep an eye on. One of the most notable was Hayden Dunlap, who posted 21 points in addition to six rebounds and four steals. The team also got some help courtesy of Brooklyn Mason, who scored 14 points and six steals.

Poquoson was working as a unit and finished the game with 12 assists. They easily outclassed their opponents in that department as York only posted two assists.

The win made it two in a row for Poquoson and bumps their season record up to 8-5. As for Smithfield, their defeat dropped their record down to 5-11.
