Volleyball Recap: Joya Shen's Big Game Can't Quite Lead Walnut over Bonita + How To Watch

After flying high against Mountain View on Friday, Walnut came back down to earth. The Mustangs took a 3-1 hit to the loss column at the hands of the Bonita Bearcats on Monday. The Mustangs were given a dose of their own medicine in this game as the Bearcats apparently hadn't forgotten their loss the last time these teams played back in October of 2024.

Walnut started the match hot and won the first set, but they struggled down the stretch and lost the last three. The final score came out to 23-25, 25-16, 25-17, 25-19.

Walnut lost despite a true team effort on offense. The best among them was Joya Shen, who had 29 digs and seven assists. She has been hot, having posted ten or more digs the last six times she's played. The team also got some help courtesy of Kalea Sunabe, who had 15 digs and 15 assists.

Bonita found their leader in sophomore Shyanne McCutcheon, who had 27 digs and six assists.

Walnut has traveled a rocky road recently, having lost three of their last four matchups. That's put a noticeable dent in their 10-13 record this season. As for Bonita, their win bumped their record up to 9-6.

Walnut wasted no time getting back out on the court and has already played their next contest, a 3-0 defeat against Diamond Bar on the 24th. As for Bonita, they have also already played their next match, a 3-1 loss against Glendora on the 24th.
