Softball Game Preview: Lake Weir Hurricanes vs. Leesburg Yellow Jackets

Lake Weir has gone 9-1 against Leesburg recently and they'll look to pad the win column further on Tuesday. Lake Weir will be playing at home against Leesburg at 7:00 p.m. Both teams took a loss in their last game, so they'll have plenty of motivation to get the 'W'.

Last Friday, Lake Weir didn't have quite enough to beat Lake Minneola and fell 9-8.

Jenna Schmitt was cooking despite her team's loss, scoring a run while going 4-for-4. Those four hits gave her a new career-high. Another player making a difference was Kyra Rigozzi, who scored a run while going 2-for-3.

Schmitt wasn't the only one working in the hit department: Lake Weir kept the outfield on their toes and finished the game with 15 hits. That's the most hits they've managed all season.

Meanwhile, Leesburg came up short against Tavares on Friday and fell 5-2. The Yellow Jackets have now taken an 'L' in back-to-back games.

Rachel Chiles was huge while hitting and pitching even without the win. On the mound, she struck out 11 batters over six innings while giving up just one earned (and four unearned) runs off three hits. She has been consistent for a while: she hasn't given up more than two walks in ten consecutive appearances. She was also solid in the batter's box, going 2-for-3 with two RBI and one double.

In other batting news, Brianna Tozer made the most of her time at bat despite the final result and went 2-for-3 with one triple, one run, and one double. That double marked the first that she hit this season.

Lake Weir's defeat was their ninth straight on the road dating back to last season, which dropped their record down to 1-9. As for Leesburg, their loss dropped their record down to 8-3.

Lake Weir took their win against Leesburg in their previous matchup back in March of 2024 by a conclusive 12-5. Will Lake Weir repeat their success, or does Leesburg has a new game plan this time around? We'll find out soon enough.
