Football Recap: Azle Falls to Cooper in First Game of Season

Azle unfortunately couldn't capitalize on their home-field advantage in their season opener. They came up short against the Cooper Cougars on Friday, falling 49-25. Sadly, the loss continues a streak the team started last season, making it four in a row.

Defeat or not, Azle got some senior leadership from Derrek Vowell and Aiden Mackey. Vowell threw for 257 yards and three TDs, while Mackey picked up 94 receiving yards and a pair of scores. Mackey showed off some serious burst, cutting upfield on a catch for 61 yards.

Leading Cooper to victory were Jaden Carrillo and Peyton Ewing. Carrillo rushed for 87 yards and a pair of touchdowns, while Ewing rushed for 98 yards and three scores on only ten carries. Those three rushing touchdowns gave Ewing a new career-high.

Coming up, Azle will take on Weatherford at 7:30 p.m. on Friday. As for Cooper, they will be playing at home against Abilene at 7:00 p.m. on Friday.
