Baseball Recap: Mater Dei Triumphs

Mater Dei's game on Saturday was a loss, but they didn't let that memory haunt them on Wednesday. They came out on top against the Carlyle Indians/Lady Indians by a score of 7-4. The Knights haven't had any issues with the Indians/Lady Indians recently, as the game was their fourth consecutive win against them.

Adrian Rendon looked comfortable as he pitched three innings while giving up no earned runs or hits. Mater Dei is 2-1 when Rendon allows three or fewer hits, but 4-13 otherwise.

At the plate, Johnny Hilmes and Cam Wellen did most of the damage at the plate: Hilmes went 2-for-3 with four stolen bases, one run, and one RBI, while Wellen went 1-for-2 with three RBI, one run, and one double. Those three RBI gave Wellen a new career-high. Another player making a difference was Hayden Melone, who went 1-for-2 with two RBI, one run, and one double.

Mater Dei's victory bumped their record up to 6-14. As for Carlyle, they have been struggling recently as they've lost nine of their last ten contests. That's put a noticeable dent in their 9-12 record this season.

Both squads will have to hit the road in their upcoming games. Mater Dei will challenge Mascoutah at 4:30 p.m. on Thursday. As for Carlyle, they will face off against Chester at 4:30 p.m. on Thursday.
