Softball Game Preview: Jonesport-Beals Royals vs. Shead Tigers

The Jonesport-Beals Royals will head out to take on the Shead Tigers at 7:00 p.m. on Saturday. The teams are on pretty different trajectories at the moment (Jonesport-Beals has three straight wins, Shead has three straight losses), but none of that matters once you're on the field.

While Jonesport-Beals' victory against Woodland wasn't quite the blowout it was the last time the pair played, they still came out on top. The Royals had just enough and edged out the Dragons 4-3. The game was the first time the Royals have beaten the Dragons on their field since May 23, 2019.

Aspen Alley made a splash while hitting and pitching. She didn't allow a single earned run while striking out 13 over seven innings pitched. She has been nothing but reliable on the mound: she hasn't tossed less than seven strikeouts any time she's pitched this season. She was also solid in the batter's box, going 2-for-4 with two stolen bases, one run, and one RBI.

Alley wasn't the only one making solid contact as three players wound up with at least one hit. One of them was Riley Balicki, who went 1-for-4 with two stolen bases and one run. Those stolen bases marked the first that Balicki has snagged this season.

Meanwhile, Shead started off well but failed to capitalize on an early lead against Calais. They came up short against the Blue Devils last Friday, falling 20-10.

Jonesport-Beals' record is now 5-2. As for Shead, their defeat dropped their record down to 1-6.

Everything went Jonesport-Beals' way against Shead in their previous matchup back in May of 2024, as Jonesport-Beals made off with a 14-2 win. Will the Royals repeat their success, or do the Tigers have a new game plan this time around? We'll find out soon enough.
