Recap: Moanalua Menehune vs. Leilehua Mighty Mules
On Thursday, the Moanalua Menehune faced the Leilehua Mighty Mules in a battle between two of the state's top teams. Moanalua took a 61-50 hit to the loss column at the hands of Leilehua. Moanalua was given a dose of their own medicine in this game as Leilehua apparently hadn't forgotten their loss the last time these teams played back in November of 2018.
When it comes to explaining why Moanalua lost, one person who can't be blamed is Gavin Pommerenk. Despite the final result, he scored 16 points along with 6 rebounds. Pommerenk scored a full 32% of Moanalua's points, the fourth time in a row he's earned more than a third of the team's points. Isaiah Kimbrough was another key contributor, scoring 4 points.
Moanalua's defeat dropped their record down to 1-3. As for Leilehua, the victory (which was their third in a row) raised their record to 4-1.
Moanalua will be staying on the road on Friday to face off against Mililani at 8:30 p.m. on December 1st. Mililani knows how to get points on the board -- the team has finished with flashy point totals in its past four contests -- so hopefully Moanalua likes a good challenge. Leilehua will have some time to savor their win since their next game is a little ways off: they'll take on Kapolei at 7:00 p.m. on December 23rd.
