League recap: North Canyon climbs in standings with win

North Canyon was the team that gained the most ground in the standings this week, jumping from 13th to 11th in I Section III. The Rattlers beat North 55-14 earlier in the week.

Brophy College Prep extended the longest winning streak in the league this week by beating Pinnacle, 59-21. The victory was the seventh in a row for the Broncos.

Brophy College Prep's dynamic duo of Tyler Bruggman and Devon Allen proved tough for the Pioneers to stop, as they were the top passer and receiver in the league this week. Bruggman threw for 368 yards and six touchdowns and Allen had 166 yards receiving. Clarence Clark helped Brophy College Prep's passing attack out by catching five balls for 126 yards.

Weston Birtcher was the most productive running back in the league this week. He ran for 164 yards on 21 carries as Mountain View topped Pinnacle. Teammate Cayman Nielsen added to the ground attack by rushing for six yards.

Desert Mountain's Kyle Allen and Mark Andrews have formed a dynamic duo this season, leading I Section III in both passing and receiving yards. Allen has thrown for 2558 yards this season, while Andrews, a 6-foot-6 receiver, has 67 catches for 1244 yards. Josh Hoekstra from Dana Zupke's team leads the league in rushing with 1522 yards.

The marquee game in the league this week will be the clash between the Toros and the Wolves. Mountain View comes into the matchup ranked 11th in the state, while Desert Mountain ranks 18th.

Red Mountain's Drake Pierre needs only 19 receiving yards against Buena to crack 1,000 for the season. He has recorded 61 catches for 981 yards this year.

Entering into this week's contest against Cibola, Antonio Hinojosa is short just 146 passing yards to break 2,000 on the season. So far this year, Hinojosa has thrown for 1854 yards with 25 touchdowns and eight interceptions.
