Baseball Game Preview: St. Edward Eagles vs. Mentor Cardinals

The St. Edward Eagles will head out to challenge the Mentor Cardinals at 5:00 p.m. on Wednesday. The two teams have allowed few runs on average (St. Edward 4.1, Mentor 3.2) so any runs scored will be well earned.

St. Edward's pitching crew heads into the game hoping to repeat the dominance they displayed on Saturday. They walked away with a 5-0 win over Riverside. The Eagles haven't had any issues with the Beavers recently, as the game was their third consecutive victory against them.

Meanwhile, it may have taken ten innings to finish the job, but Mentor ultimately got the result they hoped for on Saturday. They had just enough and edged out Hoover 4-2. The win was familiar territory for the Cardinals, who have now won four contests in a row.

Jacob Gunvelson tossed a big game, not allowing a single earned run and allowing only one hit over five innings pitched. He has been consistent for a while: he hasn't given up more than two walks in 14 consecutive appearances.

At the plate, Tyson Cendrowski was excellent, going 2-for-5 with one stolen base, two RBI, and one run. That's the most RBI he has posted since back in April. Jake McCartney was another key player, going 1-for-4 with one run, one double, and one RBI.

Mentor pushed their record up to 20-5 with the victory, which was their fifth straight on the road. Those road wins came thanks in part to their pitching effort, having only surrendered 2.4 runs on average over those games. As for St. Edward, their record is now 15-11.

St. Edward came up short against Mentor in their previous matchup back in May of 2021, falling 10-7. Can the Eagles avenge their defeat or is history doomed to repeat itself? We'll find out soon enough.
