Baseball Recap: Stoughton Comes Up Short

Stoughton had lost four straight at home, but on Wednesday they dropped their record down to 3-9 to make it five. They lost 7-1 to the Canton Bulldogs. The result was an unpleasant reminder to the Black Knights of the 13-3 loss they experienced in the pair's previous head-to-head fixture back in May of 2024.

As for Canton, they have been performing well recently as they've won five of their last six contests. That's provided a nice bump to their 6-4-1 record this season. The wins came thanks in part to their hitting performance across that stretch, as they averaged 7.2 runs over those games.

For Canton's part, Kyle Redquest made a big impact no matter where he played. He pitched two innings while giving up no earned runs or hits. Redquest also tossed no earned runs, which is notable because Canton is undefeated when he allows at most one earned run, but 3-4-1 otherwise. Redquest was also solid in the batter's box, going 1-for-3 with one home run and one stolen base.

In other pitching news, Canton got a great performance from Chris Pirrera as he didn't allow a single earned run over five innings pitched. Pirrera also tossed a walk, which is notable because the Bulldogs are undefeated when he allows at most one walk, but 2-4-1 otherwise.

Back at the plate, Teddy Shuman was incredible, going 2-for-3 with three stolen bases, two runs, and one RBI. He is becoming a predictor of Canton's success: when he posts at least two runs the team is 3-0-1 (and 3-4 when he doesn't). JT Norton was another key player, going 1-for-3 with two runs.

Both teams will have to hit the road in their upcoming games. Stoughton will head out to challenge King Philip Regional at 3:45 p.m. on Thursday. The Warriors' pitching crew has only allowed 2.1 runs per game this season, so the Black Knights' hitters will have their work cut out for them. As for Canton, they will face off against Franklin at 7:00 p.m. on Thursday.
