Preview: Pharr-San Juan-Alamo Memorial Wolverines vs. Pioneer Diamondbacks
Pharr-San Juan-Alamo Memorial has enjoyed the comforts of home their last two games, but now they'll head out on the road. They will take on The Pioneer Diamondbacks at 7:00 p.m. on Friday.
Last Friday, Pharr-San Juan-Alamo Memorial suffered a tough 49-28 loss at the hands of Mission Veterans Memorial. Pharr-San Juan-Alamo Memorial was in a tough position after the first half, with the score already sitting at 35-14.
Despite the loss, Pharr-San Juan-Alamo Memorial got a solid performance out of Miguel Resendiz, who rushed for 129 yards and three touchdowns on only 13 carries. Ryan Reyna was another key contributor, rushing for 79 yards and a touchdown.
Meanwhile, Pioneer stacked a fifth blowout onto their ever-increasing hoard on Friday. They claimed a resounding 42-7 victory over Sharyland on the road. The score at the end of the third wound up being the final score as Pioneer just coasted through the last quarter.
Julian Valdez and Dylan Tijerina were among the main playmakers for Pioneer as the former rushed for 104 yards and two touchdowns and the latter rushed for 197 yards and two touchdowns while picking up 8.6 yards per carry. Tijerina hasn't dropped below two rushing touchdowns for four straight games. Nicholas Jimenez made the highlight reel by snagging an interception and taking it all the way to the house.
Pioneer's defense stepped up as well, laying out the QB five times. Leading the way was Kaleb Hernandez and his two sacks.
Mission Veterans Memorial's victory bumped their season record to 5-4 while Pharr-San Juan-Alamo Memorial's defeat dropped theirs to 7-2.
Here's a few offensive stats to keep an eye on ahead of Friday's match: Pharr-San Juan-Alamo Memorial has been unstoppable on the ground this season, having averaged 337.9 rushing yards per game. However, it's not like Pioneer struggles in that department as they've been averaging 194.9 per game. It's looking like Friday's matchup might have some serious battles in the trenches.
Pharr-San Juan-Alamo Memorial might still be hurting after the 42-21 loss they got from Pioneer in their previous matchup back in November of 2022. Can Pharr-San Juan-Alamo Memorial avenge their defeat or is history doomed to repeat itself? We'll find out soon enough.
