Softball Game Preview: Jeannette Jayhawks vs. St. Joseph Spartans

Jeannette and St. Joseph are an even 5-5 against one another since May of 2017, but likely not for long. The Jayhawks will take on the Spartans at 4:00 p.m. on Wednesday. Neither Jeannette nor St. Joseph posted many runs in their last games, so it might be the pitching crews that decide this one.

The scorekeeper got an easy start on Monday as neither Jeannette nor Serra Catholic made it on the board until the fifth inning. The Jayhawks took a 4-0 hit to the loss column at the hands of the Eagles. That makes it the first time this season the Jayhawks have let down their home crowd.

Grace Stein spent all seven innings on the mound, and it's clear why: she surrendered only one earned (and three unearned) runs on four hits and racked up 14 Ks. She has been nothing but reliable: she hasn't tossed less than six strikeouts any time she's pitched this season.

Meanwhile, St. Joseph was not able to break out of their rough patch on Monday as the team picked up their seventh straight loss dating back to last season. They came up short against Leechburg, falling 16-0.

Jeannette's defeat was their first in the conference, dropping their conference record down to 5-1 and their overall record down to 8-4. As for St. Joseph, their loss dropped their record down to 0-4.

Everything went Jeannette's way against St. Joseph when the teams last played back in April of 2024, as Jeannette made off with an 18-3 victory. Will the Jayhawks repeat their success, or do the Spartans have a new game plan this time around? We'll find out soon enough.
