Softball Recap: Chesapeake Panthers vs. Fairland Dragons

Chesapeake extended their losing streak to five on Tuesday, dropping their season record down to 6-17 in the process. They were a single run away from ending the streak, but they lost a 7-6 heartbreaker at the hands of the Fairland Dragons. The Panthers were not able to repeat the success they had when they faced the Dragons earlier this season, when they won 9-8.

Chesapeake got a big performance out of Sophie Wagner, who went 1-for-3 with three stolen bases, two runs, and one RBI. Felicity Bellomy also deserves some recognition as she snagged her first stolen base of the season.

Fairland's first win this season bumped their record up to 1-18-1. For those keeping track at home, that's the closest victory they have posted since April 9, 2024.

On Fairland's side, Maddie Short made a big impact no matter where she played. She tossed seven innings while giving up just two earned (and four unearned) runs off seven hits. Short has been nothing but reliable on the mound: she hasn't given up more than two walks in four consecutive appearances. She was also big at the plate, getting on base in all three of her plate appearances with two runs. Those two runs gave her a new career-high.

In other batting news, Fairland let Katie Dehart and Jordan Spencer run wild. Dehart went a perfect 4-for-4 with two runs and two RBI, while Spencer went 3-for-4 with three RBI and two doubles. That's the most hits Dehart has posted since back in April. Ally Shepherd was another key player, going 3-for-4 with two runs and one double.

Chesapeake has already played their next contest, a 19-11 win against South Gallia on the 7th. As for Fairland, they also wasted no time getting back out on the field and have already played their next match, a 3-2 victory against Rock Hill on the 7th.
