Basketball Recap: Poth Takes a Loss

Poth suffered their closest defeat since March 2nd on Friday. They fell just short of the Wimberley Texans by a score of 57-54. While losing is never fun, the Pirates can't take it too hard given the team's big disadvantage in MaxPreps' Texas basketball rankings (they are ranked 955th, while the Texans are ranked 230th).

Leading Wimberley to victory were Paul Gumbert-Mendoza and Nathan Baker. Gumbert-Mendoza went 6 of 14 on his way to 17 points in addition to eight assists and five boards, while Baker went 5 for 9 on his way to 11 points and four steals. The dominant performance gave Baker a new career-high in steals. The team also got some help courtesy of Reece Wortham, who posted ten points.

Poth's loss dropped their record down to 5-7. As for Wimberley, they pushed their record up to 12-5 with the victory, which was their fifth straight at home dating back to last season.

Poth will take on Northeast Early College in a tournament on Friday. As for Wimberley, they will be taking part in a tournament against Lockhart at 10:30 a.m. on Friday. One thing working in Wimberley's favor is that they have posted at least 55 points in their last four games.
