Softball Recap: Marshwood Hawks vs. South Portland Red Riots
Marshwood had lost three straight at home, but on Tuesday they dropped their record down to 4-9 to make it four. They lost 10-1 to the South Portland Red Riots. The result was an unpleasant reminder to the Hawks of the 11-7 loss they experienced in the pair's previous head-to-head fixture back in April of 2024.
Marshwood saw five different players step up and record at least one hit. One of them was Emily Hester, who went a perfect 2-for-2 with one home run and one triple.
As for South Portland, they have been performing well recently as they've won four of their last five contests. That's provided a nice bump to their 6-7 record this season. The result was nothing new for South Portland, who have now won four matches by nine runs or more so far this season.
On South Portland's side, Maegan Berry made a splash no matter where she played. She struck out six batters over seven innings while giving up just one earned run off six hits (and not a single walk). Berry has been nothing but reliable on the mound: she hasn't tossed less than five strikeouts in eight consecutive appearances. She was also solid in the batter's box, going 2-for-5 with one stolen base, one run, and one RBI.
In other batting news, the team relied heavily on Olive Manns, who went 3-for-4 with three RBI and two runs. That's the most hits she has posted since back in April. Sadie Soucy was another key player, going 2-for-4 with two runs and one RBI.
Marshwood didn't take long to hit the field again: they've already played their next game, a 25-2 defeat against Windham on the 28th. As for South Portland, they have also already played their next contest, a 7-3 loss against Gorham on the 29th.
