Preview: Mount Miguel Matadors vs. Monte Vista Monarchs
The Mount Miguel Matadors will look to defend their home field on Friday against the Monte Vista Monarchs at 7:00 p.m. Expect the scorekeeper to be kept busy: if their previous games are any indication, both teams will really light up the scoreboard.
Mount Miguel put the finishing touches on their eighth blowout victory of the season on Friday. They breezed by El Cajon Valley on the road to the tune of 40-6. Winning may never get old, but Mount Miguel sure are getting used to it with their fourth in a row.
It was another big night for Matthew Barton, who threw for 412 yards and four touchdowns while completing 80% of his passes. Barton hasn't dropped below three passing touchdowns for four straight games. Parris Vernon was another key contributor, picking up 186 receiving yards and a touchdown.
Monte Vista fell on hard times earlier this season, but after back-to-back wins it seems like their luck might finally be changing. They came out on top against Valhalla by a score of 42-29 on Thursday. Monte Vista pushed the score to 28-7 by the end of the third, a deficit Valhalla cut but never quite recovered from.
Mount Miguel's victory was their fifth straight on the road, which bumped their overall record up to 8-1. Those good results were due in large part to their offensive dominance across that stretch, as they averaged 50.8 points per game. As for Monte Vista, their win bumped their record up to 3-6.
Everything came up roses for Mount Miguel against Monte Vista in their previous matchup back in September of 2022 as the squad secured a 41-6 win. Will Mount Miguel repeat their success, or does Monte Vista have a new game plan this time around? We'll find out soon enough.
