Basketball Recap: Monroe Takes a Loss

Monroe's game on Friday was all tied up 37-37 at the half, but sadly for them it didn't stay that way. They lost 77-53 to the Forest Hills Yellow Jackets. For those keeping track at home, that's the biggest defeat the Redhawks have suffered against the Yellow Jackets since February 17, 2022.

Despite the loss, Monroe saw an underclassman step up: freshman Janiyah Boyd almost dropped a double-double with 25 points and nine boards. Boyd's evening made it 19 games in a row in which she has scored at least 18 points. Another player making a difference was Dezire Hailey, who posted four points and 18 rebounds.

Forest Hills got their victory on the backs of several key players, but it was Leyah Melton out in front who went 8-for-18 en route to 22 points along with eight assists and six boards. What's more, Melton also posted a 50% three-point shooting accuracy, which is the highest she's achieved since back in December of 2024. Nyjaya Wingo was another key player, putting up 13 points in addition to eight steals and six rebounds.

This is the second loss in a row for Monroe and nudges their season record down to 13-6. As for Forest Hills, they are on a roll lately: they've won 14 of their last 15 games, which provided a nice bump to their 21-3 record this season.

Looking ahead, Monroe will square off against Central Academy at 4:30 p.m. on Tuesday. Monroe is facing Central Academy at the right time seeing as Central Academy is stuck on a 21-game losing streak. Forest Hills does not have any more games scheduled as of now.
